30 second EDITED TV COMMERCIAL
The purpose of this assignment is to get you to organize, write, direct, and edit a fully scripted production.
REQUIREMENTS: You will work in pairs. You are to write and produce a 30 second commercial for a real product or service. The members of your group will serve as the director, writer, camera operator, talent, and editor. These commercials will be taped and edited during class time. Productions must be 30 seconds long, plus or minus one second.
A minimum of 20 points will be deducted for a production that runs over or under time.
Prior to taping, you must produce a script/ storyboard for the production.
• The storyboard must include all shots, dialogue, announcements, music, and sound effects. The length/time of each shot/storyboard frame must be indicated on the storyboard. All graphics must be included.
• The storyboard will be turned in for a grade.
SUBJECT:• Do not copy a television commercial. You may use ideas or methods from a commercial, but you may not copy the commercial.
• All commercials must be for a club, organization, sport, or other schools sponsored event.
• Be as creative as you like, as long as you show good taste and do not offend anyone. Productions with the following inappropriate content will not be allowed: lewd, foul or obscene language or depictions; the promotion or solicitation of illegal activity; or speech that demeans or defames a person or group on the basis of gender, race, ethnicity, religious affiliation or national origin
• These are commercials to sell a product or service, not comedy routines.
OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
You may not leave campus during class to videotape. Do not disturb any classes while you are
taping. Avoid taping in halls to the classrooms. Stay in the common areas or outside. You may
shoot in classrooms, but you must have permission to go into the classroom prior to taping.
You may not get people out of other classes to be in your commercial. I will not write notes. There are plenty of people in this class you may use for talent and at least one talent must be from your group.
You will have your footage checked before you will be allowed to go tape another time. This is to help insure that you have appropriate shots. You may use some (very little) footage from the sports, activities or other tapes if the script calls for such activities, but most of the footage should be your own.

HINTS:
• Demonstrate the product. Viewers expect to see someone using or enjoying the product in a
television commercial.
• Hold a shot of the product still long enough for the viewers to easily identify it.
• Check the lighting on the product. What the product looks like is often more important than
what the talent looks like!
• Information that is easy to forget (phone number, price, address) should be display by the
C.G. even though you plan to have the talent give it orally.
• Location audio is a problem. Be sure to take the appropriate microphones. Muffled or
distracting audio does not sell a product.
• Use your imagination. Be creative. Don't let the viewer turn to another channel while you are selling your product.
• Be organized and take as few people as possible into the classrooms.
• You are representing the media technology program. Look organized and behave appropriately.
• Get a variety of shots. Use close ups, medium shots, long shots...
• Plan ahead and follow your plan.
• Time is valuable; don’t waste it.
