Divided into three eight-day sessions, ITRP offers hands-on workshops, seminars and guest lectures. Students choose their top three subjects from television studio, radio, television field, film and nonlinear editing, which run Monday morning through Friday afternoon. Friday afternoons are devoted to single-topic seminars on writing, directing or producing. During the week, late-afternoon guest lectures by industry professionals offer further insight into careers in advertising, broadcast journalism and public relations.

The National High School Institute is designed for students who wish to become better writers and editors for print or broadcast. More than that, however, you’ll study journalism from a “professional’s perspective,” learning from top-notch practitioners and distinguished college teachers. You’ll sharpen your journalistic skills, including writing news and feature stories, editorials, and television news; participate in seminars covering such subjects as ethics, interviewing techniques, and online media; and enjoy field trips to Chicago’s media and other locations.

The School brings together a film school, a “newsroom in Europe” for young journalists, a basic course in how to make one’s own documentaries, and drama as a second subject for students. Students work as a team to make a television documentary. Fieldwork is an essential component of the course, and excursions include visits to the news bureaus of ABC News, CBS News, and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, as well as visits to the BBC and Independent Television to watch programs in the making. In the Penn State Institute for High School Broadcast Journalists, you will learn and apply interviewing skills, writing and photojournalism tools, and will produce a newscast with professional equipment. During the Penn State Institute for High School Radio Broadcasting, you can learn how to report on real-life events, record live interviews, write your own material, and layer and edit sound digitally. UNC Chapel Hill is still accepting applications for students - and teachers -- who wish to participate in the TV News portion of the NC Scholastic Media Institute June 18-21. Dr. C.A. Tuggle, director of electronic communication sequence, will be teaching the classes. Students produce a newscast that is aired at the closing awards brunch. The school also offers two $625 cash scholarships to the top two students in the sequence. Cost is $160, which includes lodging, instruction and two meals.
