Gold, Silver and Bronze Winners – at each
level, up to two students and their teacher will win a paid trip to New York City to attend the United Nations Foundation’s Youth Leadership Summit.
This summit, July 17-19, 2008 at the United Nations headquarters, is an exciting opportunity to get to know other students interested in global issues, take a special UN tour and meet high-ranking UN officials.
The UN Foundation campaign, The People Speak, in partnership with the Radio and Television News Directors Foundation (RTNDF) and SchoolTube.com are challenging high school students to find the local story related to a global issue in the Think Globally, Report Locally Video Contest.
U.S. high school students will create one to two minute video news stories showing a local angle to one of four global issues.
Students will have access to amazing video footage or b-roll from the United Nations.
ONCE YOU'VE DONE ALL THE RESEARCH, HOW WILL YOU PUT IT ALL TOGETHER?
SchoolTube.com will have sample videos
and will even show you how to put together a contest entry. RTNDF’s high school broadcast journalism website, www.hsbj.org, will offer contest resources
and required Authorization Form to teachers and students. They will also have access to fact sheets that will provide context and depth to the reporting. Students should shoot their own original footage and use the United Nations b-roll to produce a visually compelling final story.
HOW DOES THIS WORK? Like any good story, the first step is to explain the global issue and put it into a context that viewers can relate to and understand. The fact sheets provide some questions to get you started thinking about the local angle. Get out there and do the local reporting. There are millions of stories out there; it’s up to you to find the most compelling one to tell!
GRAND PRIZE: Gold, Silver and Bronze Winners – up to two students at each level and their teachers will receive a trip to New York City for the United Nations Youth Leadership Summit, July 17-19, 2008.
TO ENTER THE CONTEST:
Prep: Read the fact sheets on the four Think Globally, Report Locally topics at www.schooltube.com. Are there people or events in your town that touch on one of the four topics? Each fact sheet has tips on how to find a “local news angle” for its topic.
Length: Individuals or pairs of no more than two students should plan and produce video news stories between one and two minutes in length. Schools can send in as many entries as they like.
Slate: A 10-second, full-screen slate (also known as a “title screen”) should appear before your story with the following information: • Student producers’ names (No more than two) • School name and address • Title of the entry • Total running time
Music: Use music in your video only if you have permission from the copyright holder. Or make up your own music. No music is better than illegal music. For information on music copyright for students, go to the Student Press Law Center website, www.splc.org.
Time Limit: Stay within your time limit (one to two minutes, excluding the 10-second lead-in) in your final edit.
Uploading Video: Register at SchoolTube.com/reportlocally.aspx to upload your video. Student submissions must first be approved by their teachers before they will be posted. Teachers must register at SchoolTube to approve their students’ submissions. Either students or teachers can upload videos to SchoolTube.
Please Note: In addition to uploading your story to SchoolTube.com, teachers must fax a signed Teacher Authorization Form to RTNDF at 202-223-4007. This form verifies that students created their videos with no assistance from adults and that the music is copyright free or used under license. Please save a broadcast-quality version of your story in the event that you are a winner.
Voting: All SchoolTube members will be able to vote on their favorite entries. Student favorites will receive monthly prizes in February, March and April.
Judging: International journalists will choose the Grand Prize Winners after all submissions are in.
